I have always maintained the fact that, a good cup of tea can fix anything. A while ago an old friend of mine scoffed at the statement and exclaimed, ‘well please tell me how a cup of tea is going to fix a broken leg?’ And they were right, a good cup of tea isn’t going to suddenly whip out a white overcoat, cast your leg up and sign it ‘tetley xoxo’. It’s not about what the cup of tea can physically do it for you, it’s the process of making a hot drink and then taking the time to sit back and just breathe.
Life can get extremely chaotic at times and people learn to deal with the drama, deadlines and decisions in their own ways. But when you’re growing up and you’re first learning how to approach different problems and overcome them in a positive manner, it’s not an easy thing to do. People can be so effortlessly swept off their feet by the stress, anxiety and paranoia in their lives, especially when you’re not sure how to manage it. This can often lead to bigger issues and original problems never having been solved. When you’re not sure how to quickly and efficiently blow the candle out on the catalyst, it will soon be a hurricane of crap you do not know how to deal with.
A hurricane of crap you do not know how to deal with is no stranger of mine. Constantly, I find myself in situations where I do have a mass of issues and I am never sure where to start; and this just makes you want to crawl into bed and sleep so you don’t have to face reality which is the process of flushing the shit. Now, crawling under the sheets, turning off the lights and sleeping to avoid dealing with things is also something I am not a stranger to, but is also something that is okay to do from time to time. There is nothing more satisfying than taking a long nap when you’re supposed to be finding a part-time job or sorting out your bills; as when you’re asleep, nothing exists and thus no problems need to be dealt with. The downside is eventually we all must wake up, go downstairs and this is where the cup of tea comes in.
It’s so important in life that we all have the time and ability to step back from everything and anything that is occurring in our day to day lives. When you’re constantly caught up in the chaos, you will become overwhelmed and burnt out, no matter how strong you think you are. For me, a cup of tea signifies taking that time to sit back and reflect on your day, or your week or any problems that need to be addressed. It’s also a time where you can just not think about anything and just be serene, peaceful and warm. It can also be a checkpoint for your day, where things aren’t going right you can just go back to the cup of tea, breathe and start again. There have been many situations in my life where I have immediately overreacted or not been okay and not only has this caused problems for me but for other people too. Once I’ve sat back and truly reflected on my decisions on how I’ve dealt with things I almost always decide that I needed to have took that time out of my day to breathe and not be submerged in that situation all at once. This isn’t always the case, it’s 100% okay to agree with how you reacted if you’ve took that time to really absorb the situation and understand the consequences.
Though I do love the concept of a cup of tea or coffee fixing things, I do understand, also that this is not the case. Like Frances Shea said in ‘Legend’, “A cup of tea can solve anything. Bit under the weather? Tea. You left your husband? Tea is the answer. [But] what do you do, after all, when the only person that can ever get to you is gone? Cup of tea? I don't think so.” There have been recent cases in my life where I have decided not to continue friendships because a cup of tea couldn’t fix the mess they made. Sometimes you have to make big decisions that aren’t always going to be the most positive outcome, but always the best outcome for you. Cups of tea can help you take the time to relax or to reflect, but a cup of tea can’t physically fix anything – only help you get out your toolbox and make a move.
So, apart from the fact that I absolutely adore the taste of tea and coffee, this is the reasoning behind why I constantly have a mug in my hand and a tattoo of a coffee cup on my ankle. Cups of tea are my checkpoints because “when there is tea, there is hope.” After all, nothing ever really seems as bad as it is after a good cup of tea.
Go nuts guys.
