What am I waiting for? Maybe it’s the summer holidays, festivals and holiday and parties. Maybe it’s University, new friends, wholly writing for a course and independence. Maybe it’s even just finishing my last exam, the freedom, the lack of pressure and sleep. But…the real answer to what I should really be waiting for…is nothing. We cannot waste one precious moment waiting for these good things to happen when life could stop in any second. We really do not know when we won’t wake up, or when we will leave home and unintentionally not return. There are some truly dark corners of this world that shouldn’t be explored that are waiting to take these irreplaceable moments away from us. So stop waiting for Fridays…and start living now.
“Just the fact that we don’t know our true date of death should be enough motivation to live every day to your highest potential” And now that exams are finally coming to a close, I think it’s time that people start living by this motto. I have spent too much time personally, not seizing moments that I really should have. As when you look back in life there are going to be times you really wish you had ‘yes’ and started creating these memories. If we keep locking ourselves away from the world in the fear that if we don’t, we won't' have a good future because our lives revolves around the economy and well-paid jobs…then we are really not going to have a life that is worth living. The more we say no…the more memories we are destroying. Take it from me, throughout the whole of 6th form I have loved staying inside and not going to parties or spending good, quality time with my friends. Now, this isn’t because I didn’t want to go, I just felt safer and more comfortable in bed. What kind of life is that? If I were to die tomorrow and someone were to show me a montage of my life, a great majority of it would be asleep or moaning about my life. This is not what I want to remember when my day comes…
There are times where we need to be selfish. This is a really difficult thing for any human being to do. Being selfish means putting yourself first, doing things you want to do because you love yourself and nothing is more important than your own happiness. If we weren’t selfish every so often then we would just be playing life on the safe side and not really achieving or doing anything. To be selfish is to love yourself. Obviously I am not telling you to go out and like…steal a lolly pop from a child because that lolly pop would make you happy because that truly is just cruel. Don’t be seeking revenge on your ex-girlfriend by taking a shit on her car because that would feel great. I am just saying it’s okay and important to do what makes you happy and don’t let that be hindered by people who think they are more important than you, or people or things that do not make you truly happy.
“Don’t call it a dream. Call it a plan.” We need to aim for the greatest of our aspirations. If we don’t know what day is our last, then we need to make sure we are achieving every day of our life. And achieving will be doing what you love. You’ll be achieving your greatest ambitions by constantly having fun working towards them. Leave a legacy behind with your passions, burn a hole in the clouds with the fire from your desires and make sure you carve your name into stone and don’t merely trace it into the sand. “What if you should fall? Oh darling, but what if you should fly?”
“We don’t get the same moment in life twice” We need to stop living off the movies and books and what they tell us in school…we need to go out into the world and make it our own. We need to start living and breathing everything and anything we need to be happy, passionate and ambitious in life. If there is anything people regret at the end of their lives is that they didn’t do enough. I thought we were silly for having arguments moments before we all leave for University. But in fact we’re stupid for having any arguments in the first place, you never know what your last words could be to someone, so make sure they are “I love you”, “You have a fine ass”, “You’re going to change the world.” Don’t waste a single breath.
So don’t wait for Friday, don’t wait for summer, don’t wait for University, don’t wait for the love of your life. It is time to start living now. There are no second chances, there are no breaths worthless and no moments lived twice. Go out there and put your name in the stories, go out and explore the world and find what makes you happy, I want everyone smiling every single day until their last day…because we don’t know when that is. Make every breath count.
