“When a flower doesn't bloom, fix the environment in which it grows, not the flower.” I have always believed in life that we have to learn to love ourselves and the most important thing amongst that is to make sure that we are happy. Most will consider this priority selfish, and in some events that shines through more prominently than others, but we can’t always be Peter Pan.
Prioritising yourselves in life often means that you can’t put other people first. This fact absolutely sucks and it’s the worst thing to have to put into action when you’re at a point in life where “you just don’t care about nonsense”, and you just want to focus on becoming the best you that you can be and that “growth is so important.” Often these environments we've put ourselves in, once benefited our growth, but will no longer be able to feed into our happiness and personal journey of self-discovery. So, we have to bite the bullet and find the courage to be able to let go and move on. Now, I realise that this is a very selfish thing to do, as we have just completely left someone or an environment. This makes us look very villainous, but like I said, we can’t always be Peter Pan.
But it’s not that we haven’t considered the other people, because more often than not, they were the only thing stopping us from making that next step into something new and to be able to start the next progress of growth. It can often take weeks to make a decision as big as that. So, to be treated as a villain can be a shock because it wasn't a decision taken so lightly; plus Captain Hook intended to assassinate Pan for power, not leave him to start his next voyage of self-discovery! But it’s important to understand that not everybody can grasp the idea of self-love and what it takes to make somebody happy. Because we ourselves may not be able to really define what is going to help us develop into better people, but if we aren't happy truly then we just now it’s time to move on. But if you are on the receiving end of this momentous speech, just remember you were always at the forefront of their mind; and if you care about them you'll want them to strive without criticism.
Being a villain doesn't mean it doesn't hurt. Just because we've made the independent decision to go out and do what’s best for us, doesn't mean we are not going to mourn what we are leaving behind. Do you really think that even Captain Hook wouldn't miss the adventures Pan took him on? It was something that was a huge part of our lives at some point and it isn't something we could ever regret nor forget. But if someone can’t accept that and let you go, then you just have to remember that you’re not truly a villain because it took time to make the decision and you are feeling the emotional pain as well. It’s just hard for other people to see that if they are the aftermath of your self-discovery.
With people my age venturing off on gap years, University or new jobs; it is a difficult time in the year where people need to sit down and think what is going to be best for their happiness and their journeys ahead of them. We all have the massive question following us like a cloud, pelting down like rain every now and then to remind us “who are you? Who are you going to be? What do you want to be? And what are you going to do to make sure you’re happy on this journey to find the answers?” And I guarantee right now nobody knows the answer, but it doesn't really matter, it’s the action we take now to ensure our emotional stability is in the right place to chase the answers down.
Self-love and our own happiness can be considered selfish. And yes it will leave behind some scars. But in the end you can only do what is best for you, as that is the best gift you can give to this world. We can’t always be the hero and do what’s best for everyone else and the people we love, we can’t always be Peter Pan…and that’s okay.
Go Nuts Guys.
