Why is that we are completely judged on a piece of material we wear simply to cover up our nude bodies?
Or because of the fact that the weather is pulling a tantrum?
The purpose of clothes is to cover up and be warm and protected. Not to be judged within every inch of our soul based on the type of material we use to do so. Non-school uniform day for me is hell on earth. And no - not because I can't decide what to wear.
I am not one of those dull-minded creatures who spend hours upon hours the week before preparing for the fashion walk of their life. It's not that I don't want to look good - I just really don't care. The clothes I wear are for my comfort and my comfort only. I've never, ever really been good at choosing what jeans go with what shirt or keeping up with the latest fashions, which is relatively weird considering that I was brought up by a Mother who is completely obsessed with what looks good and what the latest celebrities are wearing. And bless her heart did she try to bring me up to be a pretty young girl but she has finally come to terms with the fact that I am indeed a slacker when it comes to clothes.
And that shouldn't matter. But apparently society has a different view on this.
Uniforms in schools were introduced so that bullying wouldn't take place. Some parents can't afford nice clothes and then when we grow up and get part-time jobs we aren't earning enough to keep up with stupid "trends." Money shouldn't be the key to happiness and it's not - so why are some people with a lack of money unhappy?
I am not suggesting this is all about money either. Some people are bullied in general for the clothes they LIKE to wear. Personally, I wear clothes that are 20 times too big for me and are normally, more than often, black. My wardrobe looks like a black hole into another dimension, a black abyss, what the world looks like when you close your eyes to go to sleep. For me - that's comfort. But for example - we have a school prom coming up and I hate wearing dresses with a passion - even if they were black or baggy. School will not change the rules for girls like me, they will not let you in without a dress that is posh and fancy. I genuinely feel self-conscious and scared and I can't walk out of the door with something I am not comfortable in. Does this mean I can't go to prom? All for the fear of being taunted by others? This is how people feel coming in on non-school uniforms days.
"What a slut - who does she think she is in those shorts?"
"What a chav - who does he think he is in those trackies?"
"What a slob - who does she think she is in that jumper?"
"What an emo - who does she think she is wearing black?"
It's cruelty and taunts like this that make people around us in everyday life feel self-conscious and feel they can't enjoy events that everybody else does. Why should clothes be the reason we're limited in everyday life? I think society needs to take a look around and realize there are things so much more important than the latest trends or who has socks with little frilly white bits sticking out of their shoes. It's ridiculous. People should be able to wear whatever they want to wear and be proud.
It's really just a piece of material covering us up?
Why should that define us as people in anyway?
So wear what you want you to wear - whether it be for comfort - whether it be expression - whether it be black jeans to your high school prom - do it and forget what society thinks. They should be grateful you're not naked ;)
